AGAVE QUILTERS Agave Quilters was started in the Palo Verde swimming pool in the fall of 1994. At the time, Jerry Huerckes was teaching swimming and water exercise at the pool. After taking a quilting class she invited 6 aspiring quilters to her home and began the first quilting lessons there. In March of 1995, the first meeting was held at the home of Dorrie Meehan, 23 ladies attended. The group then moved to the Sun Lakes Country Club for future meetings. As the group grew, meetings were moved from the Friendship Room to the Arts & Crafts Room, to Cottonwood, to the IronOaks Sewing Room and finally to the Oakwood Ballroom. We sponsor trips to various quilt shows and have guest speakers and teachers come from Maine to California to address our current membership of 147. Our initial goal was to “continue to the knowledge of and to promote the appreciation of quilts; to sponsor quilting activities; to encourage quilt making and collecting; to contribute to the growth of knowledge of quilting techniques through education; to promote friendships and philanthropic endeavors”. We have done that and so much more.
