An Active Adult Community

SUN LAKES FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Sun Lakes Fire District was formed by the residents of the community in July 1975 with the assistance of developer E.J. Robson.  The organization operated as a volunteer ambulance service and fire department until 1987 when the first paid firefighter was hired.

The first fire station (25455 S. Sun Lakes Blvd.) was built in 1978, followed by a second fire station built (25020 S. Alma School Rd.) in 1990.  The first station was replaced in 2004 with a state of the art facility and the second station was remodeled to provide additional crew quarters and administrative area.  Both stations are equipped with an ambulance and fire engine to provide round-the-clock protection to the community.

The Sun Lakes Fire Department serves an area of 6.7 square miles with geographic boundaries of Chandler Heights Rd. to Hunt Highway and McQueen Rd. to Price Rd.  The country clubs of Sun Lakes, Cottonwood Palo Verde and IronOaks as well as the subdivisions of Oakwood Hills and San Tan Vistas are protected by the firefighters and paramedics.  The community is served by fifty-six dedicated employees.

The Sun Lakes Fire District is governed by a five member Board of Directors elected at large from the Sun Lakes residents.

The District is funded principally through property taxes and ambulance services.  Eighty-three percent of the revenues are from property taxes and nine percent from transport charges.  The remaining revenues are generated from District products and service fees.

The Community Assistance Program (CAP) was implemented in November 2001 which provides crisis intervention and social support by community volunteers to family members of patients who are experiencing a medical emergency or fire situation.

Further information about the Sun Lakes Fire Department is on their website www.slfd.org.
