SUN LAKES WRITERS GROUP

The Sun Lakes Writers’ Workshop was started in 1982 by Rosalie Davis.  Rosalie had been active in writings and when she came to Sun Lakes she organized the Workshop and was its leader for over six years.  The members would gather together each week and read what they had written during the week:  poetry, short stories, memoirs, essays or excerpts from books they were writing.  Each month the best writings were published in the Sun Lakes Splash.  Early on the group published a yearly anthology.  The art work on the covers of the books was designed by Lois Grotewold who is still an active member.  Anthologies are now published every other year.  After Rosalie left, Esther Johnson was the leader for many years.  In 2006 the name was changed to the Sun Lakes Writers’ Group.  Annually the Writers’ Group in invited to read for the Sun Lakes Book Review Club.

Currently the moderator of the group is Bernice Kantrowitz.  The writers meet every Tuesday in Room A08 at Cottonwood.  After a short business meeting, each member has an opportunity to read.  For those writers who need to be motivated, several words are chosen.  Writers may or may not choose to write on the word.  During the meetings members have an opportunity to listen to papers written by colleagues in a friendly atmosphere.  The Group’s goal is to continue to provide an opportunity for writers to get together, share ideas, inspire creativity and continue with the enthusiasm and dedication that started with Rosalie Davis.
